My name is Laura Beinecke, and I am from Salem, Wisconsin. Currently, I am on stage two of my instrument training.
I joined my high school’s aviation club my junior year to help build our third aircraft, an RV12is. I had wanted to do aerospace engineering since I was 7 years old, so this club was an amazing opportunity. Flying had been my worst fear for as long as I can remember, but after some persuasion from all my friends in the club, I decided to give it a try and go up in the second RV12 that the club had built. After about 30 minutes of pure terror, I realized how much I loved it and decided to get my PPL. Despite Covid, I was able to get my license before my 18th birthday.
I still had my passion for aerospace engineering, and so that’s what I went to college for last year. However, after nearly 7 months of not flying, I realized I couldn’t live a life where I wasn’t flying nearly every day.
Training here at Minnesota State University, Mankato has been such a great experience. I’ve made so many friends, and I’m encouraged by them every day. I’m constantly being pushed to do my absolute best. All the instructors are so friendly and helpful. It’s such a close-knit community, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.
I’m still debating what I want to do after graduation. There are so many amazing opportunities in the world of aviation. My flight instructors back home are corporate pilots that fly Gulfstreams, so that definitely had a huge influence on me. However, with some of the partnership programs here, I’m heavily considering the airlines as well. Either way, I know I’ll be happy as long as I’m flying.
